Not sure what products should you reach for to combat dull skin that clearly appears flat and lackluster?

I wasn’t sure either! There are many beauty products marketed as good and suitable for this type of skin, and the abundance of such cosmetics makes it difficult for us to pick the one that works best. Unless you take into consideration reviews and opinions of those who have already gone through that process – like me, for example.

Searching for the ideal…

It took me awfully long to find the right face serum for myself. I wanted to get a product that wouldn’t only deliver moisture and nutrients but also deal with my then skin concerns: brighten and erase dark spots, combat fine lines and promote supple skin. But does the ideal exist? It turns out that it does!

Vitamin C face serum

After testing many hit-and-miss products, I finally found a face serum that sorts out problems with my skin. A lightweight and enriched with ascorbic acid, this serum has a surprisingly beneficial effect on my skin. In case some of you don’t know it, vitamin C is the finest of all vitamins. When used in cosmetics, it:

  • fights off free radicals that trigger oxidative stress
  • stimulates collagen synthesis, thus making skin more elastic
  • leaves skin brighter and minimizes the appearance of dark spots
  • speeds up the wound-healing process
  • is antibacterial, thus able to deal with acne
  • promotes even-toned, radiant and healthy-looking complexion

I’d also like to draw your attention to one vital issue – the skin care product that vitamin C is added to. If you want to make use of all its properties, better reach for a face serum. Why? There are two main reasons for that.

  1. Vitamin C concentration in a face serum is always larger than in a face cream.
  2. Face serum absorbs into the skin quicker and reaches deeper than a face cream does.

Which vitamin C serum do I recommend?

This issue is pretty clear: pick the cosmetics that offer substantial amounts of vitamin C. In other words, vitamin C must be the key ingredient in the product you want to use, otherwise the effect may not live up to your expectations. On the other hand, too much vitamin C may lead to irritation. This means that vitamin C concentration must be neither too low nor too high.

Another important aspect is the texture, or density, if you will. Serum must be lightweight in order to be easily absorbed into the skin without clogging pores. And if the serum is enriched with naturally-derived substances such as plant extracts, then it can’t get any better! Finding a product that has all of these qualities is a real treat. With such a face serum you can be positive that it will take good care of your skin.

Don’t worry, you can find such products – they do exist. Just be patient and don’t get discouraged if you fail at the first trial. Alternatively, or to speed up the process of finding the right face serum, I suggest checking out my ranking of the Best Vitamin C Facial Serums.

THE BEST VITAMIN C FACE SERUMS

1. Nanoil Vitamin C Face Serum

Nanoil Vitamin C Face Serum

That’s the best face serum with vitamin C, at least for me. I have no doubts that my skin loves this formula. And I didn’t have to wait for the effects to show on my face because they appeared after just one use – isn’t it great? My skin didn’t feel tight, it became brighter and radiant. Over time, this serum managed to erase dark spots and remove tiny post-acne marks, which had been lingering on my face for definitely too long. I owe this effect to vitamin C, naturally. There’s 1.5% concentration of this brightening ingredient in this product, served in a stabilized, non-oxidizing form. Vitamin C is teamed with Boerhavia Diffusa extract which is an antioxidant and anti-aging agent. Nanoil brightening serum is an exceptional formula – you’ll feel the difference the moment you put the serum on the face – I promise you that. Nanoil face serum enriched with vitamin C is marketed for dull, tired-looking, uneven complexion. But in my opinion it should work for all skin types because it seems to be a universal product.

2. Clinique Fresh Pressed Daily Booster With Pure Vitamin C

Some time ago I used a vitamin C serum brought out by Clinique, and I have to admit that the effects were comparable to Nanoil’s. In Fresh Pressed Daily Booster the pure form of vitamin C is teamed with, among others, squalane, cucumber extract, barley extract, mulberry root extract, sugar cane and sea algae extract, Baikal skullcap root extract (so-called baicalin), wheat proteins, grape fruit extract or divine grass extract. As you can see, the list of ingredients is pretty long, but you know what? This product didn’t trigger irritation even once. It was okay for me but I think that people with sensitive skin should be careful with this serum. My advice would be to get a sample before spending money on a regular product, just in case.

3. Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop Serum

What if you could put a drop of fresh, vitamin-rich juice on your face? You don’t need fresh juice if you have Klairs face serum. This is a really cool skincare product available at a reasonable price, enriched with L-ascorbic acid (i.e. vitamin C), oils (lavender and orange) and plant extracts taken from anise, lotus flower, peony, Baikal skullcap, pyrethrum, rhubarb and tea. Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop is a very lightweight serum that absorbs into the skin quickly. The effects appear equally fast because after just a couple of uses, my skin became healthy-looking. Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop brightens, revives and deeply moisturizes the skin every day.

4. Olehenriksen Truth Serum Collagen Boosted with True-C Complex

It turns out that vitamin C can be combined with collagen – after all, both of them are proven to have a positive effect on the skin, defying ageing, for example. I found this astonishing duo in Olehenriksen Truth face serum. This oil-free formula is made up of stabilized vitamin C mixed with orange extract, aloe juice, hyaluronic acid and collagen – for clear and supple skin. To me, this serum is a multi-tasker: it strengthens, brightens, moisturizes and soothes irritations. It literally does all of that but only if you use it every day. I think that this serum may work out for you if your skin is dry and tired-looking. It’s pretty expensive, though.

5. Mario Badescu Skin Care Vitamin C Serum

Don’t let the design mislead you – this green bottle and a white pipette isn’t a medicine but another face serum with vitamin C that I’d like to recommend to you. The formula looks pretty simple as there are only a few ingredients, including collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, aloe vera juice, cucumber extract and ginseng. It’s worth pointing out that Mario Badescu Skin Care Vitamin C Serum contains no silicones, no alcohol, no phthalates or any potential allergens. If you use the serum regularly, you can be sure that it will replenish moisture to your skin, erase discoloration, even the skin tone and deal with fine lines. I think that this serum is slow when it comes to delivering the promised results. I also think that it’s small and it should cost less as for this small amount it’s available at.

6. La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C

Here’s another brightening face serum that I’d like to draw your attention to mainly because I’m a huge fan of this brand. La Roche-Posay Pure Vitamin C is formulated with pure vitamin C combined with salicylic acid. This combo promotes cell turnover, meaning that it helps skin repair itself faster. Peptides are responsible for bringing relief to irritated skin. That is how La Roche-Posay face serum handles a few tasks at the same time: it brightens pigmentation spots and promotes radiant appearance, reduces fine lines, smoothes the skin, and improves its elasticity. Naturally, the serum will give you allthat if you keep using it every day, in the morning.

7. Purito Pure Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Finally, the last but definitely not the least of my favorite serums – Purito Pure Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid Serum. I’d describe it as a lightweight anti-ageing face serum with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid and a blend of plant extracts (e.g. apple and ginseng). This formula makes skin elastic, revived, rejuvenated and visibly brighter. I liked Purito serum for freeing me from the dark circles that used to appear under the eyes. Sadly, I found some minuses like for example the fact that isn’t an all-natural formula. The form of vitamin C breaks down when exposed to a high temperature and the sunlight. And I also hate the fact that I have to keep this serum in the refrigerator. Leaving the bathroom to bring the serum, apply it and then come back to put it back in the fridge isn’t convenient, right?
